Moriel earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 2006 from UCLA and her PhD in psychology in 2012 from UCLA with Dr. Michael S. Fanselow. Her thesis work on fear and the hippocampus was supported by fellowships from the National Science Foundation and the American Psychological Association, and was awarded the New York Academy of Sciences Cattell Award and the Gengerelli Distinguished Dissertation Award. She completed her postdoctoral work with David J. Anderson in the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering at Caltech in 2019. Her postdoctoral work on social isolation and the neuropeptide Tac2 was supported by a fellowship from the National Science Foundation, a NARSAD Young Investigator Award, a L'Oréal for Women in Science Award, and a NIMH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award. In the fall of 2019 she became an assistant professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Since starting her lab, she’s been the recipient of a Sloan Fellowship, Whitehall Foundation Research Award, McKnight Scholar Award, Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship Award, and also been named an HHMI Freeman Hrabowski Scholar.

Katie Rondem, Lab Manager
Katie received her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 2010 and a second bachelor’s in Biology from the University of Utah in 2014. She earned a master’s degree in 2018 from Cornell University, focusing on defining the gene regulatory networks underlying butterfly wing color patterning in the Reed Lab. Before joining the Zelikowsky Lab, Katie worked in the High-Throughput Genomics Core at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the English Lab at the University of Utah, where she optimized and applied the lab's viral directed evolution platform to evolve various GPCR targets. Outside of the lab, she enjoys hiking, backpacking, ceramics, and reading.

Michael Conoscenti, Postdoctoral Fellow
Michael earned his bachelor’s degrees in human biology and theatre in 2011 from the University of Southern California and his Ph.D. in psychology in 2020 from UCLA with Dr. Michael S. Fanselow. His thesis work focused on the effects of stress severity and chronicity on the subsequent behavior and biology of the organism. He is excited to continue work in the stress research field at Utah. In his free time, Michael enjoys running, hiking, baking, and playing board games with his wife Leanna.

Sewon Park, Postdoctoral Fellow
Sewon received her bachelor’s degrees in life science and chemical and biomolecular engineering from Sogang University in 2012 and her Ph.D. from the interdisciplinary program in neuroscience at Seoul National University in 2019 with Dr. Sukwoo Choi. After graduating, she spent three years as a postdoc at Seoul National University. Her thesis work focused on the processing of the value information in the basal amygdala. In her free time, Sewon enjoys traveling, swimming, watching animation and playing games.

Jordan Grammer, Graduate Student

Jordan graduated from the University of Alabama in 2020 with a B.S. in biology and a minor in neuroscience. She had previously done research on the impacts of brain stimulation (tDCS) on language learning, the social behavior of Hydra, and the innate immune response in Drosophila. Jordan is excited to study the neural mechanisms of behavior. In her free time she enjoys hiking, snowboarding/skiing, watching Netflix, and playing with her two cats.

Lo Kronheim, Graduate Student
NSF GRFP Honorable Mention
Lo obtained a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience in 2020 from Brandeis University, where they researched homeostatic plasticity. After graduation they spent two years working as a research assistant at Oregon Health and Science University where they studied the frontostriatal pathway’s involvement in impulse inhibition. They’re currently interested in investigating how the hallucinogen psilocybin impacts social behavior and neural function in socially isolated mice. Outside of lab they can be found rock climbing, snowboarding, puzzling or playing with their cat.

Donzelle Taylor, Graduate Student

Donzelle graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2021 with a bachelor’s in experimental psychology. During her bachelor’s, Donzelle spent three years researching the neuroendocrinology of obesity. As a neuroscience PhD student, Donzelle is interested in studying behavior. Outside of research, she spends her time traveling, reading, and practicing embroidery.

Yanfeng Du, Graduate Student
Yanfeng received a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Pharmacy and a master’s degree in Neuropsychopharmacology from Nanjing Medical University, where he studied mechanisms and treatment strategies of methamphetamine addiction. As a neurobiology PhD student, Yanfeng is interested in the roles of neuropeptides and their receptors in neural circuits related to social isolation. Outside the lab, Yanfeng enjoys playing tennis, hiking, and plans to learn snowboarding.

Camille Reynoso Fernandez, Post-Baccalaureate Student
Camille is a post-baccalaureate student and IDEAS In Neuroscience Program Scholar. She graduated from CUNY Brooklyn College In May 2024 with a B.S. in psychology and a minor in neuroscience. During her free time, you’ll find her reading books (fiction), analyzing song lyrics, and eating Nerds Gummy Clusters.

Erin Carroll, MD-PhD Student
Erin is studying biology with an emphasis in anatomy and physiology at the University of Utah. She enjoys learning about relationships between organisms and is interested in how social behavior can be affected. Erin likes writing and spending time outside, especially in the mountains and the desert.

Lorrin Malady, Lab Technician
Lorrin graduated from the University of Utah in 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and a minor in applied ethics. She is interested in research that explores neurobiology and behavior, with a focus on the neural basis of defensive social behaviors. Lorrin is from the Seattle area and plans to attend medical school. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, painting, watching movies, and cooking.

Saee Ashtaputre, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Saee is a third-year student at the University of Utah majoring in biology, with minors in psychology, chemistry, and pediatric clinical research. She’s on the pre-med track and is interested in the clinical aspects of psychology and the integration of research with patient care. She currently works as a medical assistant at University of Utah Health and loves to volunteer at Primary Children’s Hospital. In her free time, she loves to read, dance, and hike.

Amanda Dryer, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Amanda earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing with a minor in art history from Utah Valley University in 2020. After three years as a professional artist, she has recently returned to school with the goal of becoming a physician scientist. As a non-traditional student, Amanda joins the lab excited to learn more about neurobiology and the research process. Outside of the lab, Amanda enjoys a vibrant life filled with running, traveling, outdoor adventures, and spending time with her husband.

Calvin Kern, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Calvin is a pre-med student currently in his third year studying biochemistry at the University of Utah. As an additional part of his bachelor’s degree, Calvin is working towards a minor in biology, a result of his special interest in anatomy and physiology. He works as a CNA at Barton Creek Senior Living, a barista at a boba place, and as a teaching assistant for biological chemistry. Calvin hopes to one day become an orthopedic surgeon and, towards this end, is applying to medical school this cycle.

Elijah Lugo, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Elijah is an undergraduate studying math and family studies with an emphasis in abuse dynamics. He is also pursuing an undergraduate certificate in quantitative research analysis. He is interested in graduate training for quantitative psychology. Specifically, he hopes to work alongside clinicians to improve mental health interventions for those in crisis. Elijah spends his free time appreciating music, hanging out with his kittens, and falling down internet rabbit holes.

Genesis “Geny” Marquez, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Genesis is an undergraduate student at the University of Utah pursuing an honors B.S. in biology with a minor in chemistry. After graduation, Genesis plans on applying to medical school. Genesis is fluent in Spanish, so she hopes to be able to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking patients and build more trust within the healthcare system. In her free time, she enjoys grabbing a sweet treat, traveling, and hanging out with her friends.
